What Is Cubic Zirconia? CZ vs Diamond Explained

Cubic zirconia, usually shortened to CZ, is a manufactured gemstone used for diamond-like sparkle. It is a different material from diamond, including laboratory-grown diamond. If you are choosing jewelry for its look and your budget, that distinction helps you compare pieces without confusing the stone with the metal around it.

Cubic zirconia vs diamond: the useful distinction

GIA identifies cubic zirconia as a diamond simulant: it can resemble diamond, but its composition and physical properties are different. Laboratory-grown diamond is a separate category. GIA also notes that CZ scratches more easily than diamond. These differences matter when comparing jewelry descriptions and deciding how carefully to wear and store a piece.

For more on those material differences, see GIA's guide to diamond simulants and its explanation of simulants and laboratory-grown diamonds.

The stone and the metal are two different details

“Cubic zirconia” describes the stone. It does not tell you whether a ring, chain or setting is sterling silver, plated metal or another material. Likewise, “silver tone” describes an appearance and should not be read as a promise of sterling silver. Look for the exact materials on the individual product page, and ask us about any detail that is not listed.

Choose a shape you will actually wear

A solitaire silhouette keeps the focus on one stone. A halo design frames a center shape with smaller details, while a band can be easier to combine with the rings you already own. The useful comparison is not just how a piece looks in a close-up photograph: check its listed dimensions, available sizes and how much space you want it to take up on your hand.

Browse the current silver-tone cubic zirconia rings and use our ring size chart before choosing a size. Availability and specifications vary by item.

For bracelets, fit comes before the stack

A tennis bracelet can be a single line of sparkle or part of a layered look. First compare your wrist measurement with the product's listed length and size options. A style that looks delicate in a photograph may fit differently depending on your wrist and the construction of the clasp.

Our bracelet measuring guide explains what to check. You can then compare the current bracelets rather than relying on a category-wide sizing assumption.

Care for the whole piece

The setting, finish and any other materials matter as much as the center stone when choosing a cleaning method. Follow the care information for your item. For the silver-tone styles in our edit, put jewelry on after perfume and lotion have dried, remove it before showering, swimming or exercise, and wipe it gently with a soft dry cloth after wearing. Store pieces separately to reduce rubbing. Do not assume a cleaning method suitable for a loose stone is suitable for a finished piece.

A short checklist before you order

  • Check which stone and metal or finish are actually listed.
  • Compare measurements and available sizes, not just the product photograph.
  • Read the item's care information and the current return policy.
  • Ask about an unlisted detail before making a decision.

Start with the shape and fit that suit you, then use the product details to decide whether a piece belongs in your everyday rotation.
